Aries, the ram
A sign about courage: choosing to act while still afraid.
Same name, different weeks. The two traditions measure the sky from different starting points, now about 24 degrees apart. Dates are for 2026 and can shift by a day from year to year. Why there are two
The Western reading
- Fire sign
- Action and will
- Cardinal sign
- Starts things
- The Warrior
- The Pioneer
- The Daredevil
- The Survivor
Aries is learning courage. Not the absence of fear, but acting while your knees still shake. Forrest pictures a climber halfway up a rock face: frightened, and climbing anyway. Everyone has a different mountain. For one person it is learning to swim. For another, it is finally speaking up to a hard boss.
It comes with the fire already lit: honesty, directness, enthusiasm, and a dislike of being told what to do. When a real crisis hits, Aries often turns cool and clear while everyone else panics.
A warrior with no worthy fight goes looking for one. When Aries steps around the real challenge, the fire spills into small arguments and touchy days that leave everyone tired.
The Vedic reading
In the Vedic tradition, a sign takes most of its meaning from the planets inside it, so this reading starts with the Sun.
Where Parashara says the Sun shines strongest.
Parashara calls the Sun a king. Aries is where the king is strongest, the sign of the Sun's exaltation, with its peak at 10 degrees. The sign's ruler, Mars, is the king's army chief and a friend.
Parashara pictures Aries as a four-footed creature of the hills, a sign that stands for courage.

- Mars
- Kind of sign
- Movable: starts things. The West calls this Cardinal.

- By night
- Part of the body
- The head
Parashara pictures time as one person lying across the sky, with Aries at the head and Pisces at the feet. Each sign is one part of that body. One more thing: in Vedic practice, people usually go by their Moon sign rather than their Sun sign. The Moon sign needs a birth time.
