Libra, the scales
A sign about balance: staying calm by seeing both sides, then still choosing.
Same name, different weeks. The two traditions measure the sky from different starting points, now about 24 degrees apart. Dates are for 2026 and can shift by a day from year to year. Why there are two

- The Peacemaker
Libra is learning calm. Not the calm of not caring, but the calm of someone who feels everything and stays steady anyway. Forrest puts its aim simply: to calm down. Beauty helps. So does a deep breath before the tension builds.
It comes with an eye for beauty and a gift for seeing both sides. Where others pick a team, Libra sees that each side holds part of the truth.
Seeing every side makes choosing hard. Libra can keep its options open so long that life waits, smiling on the outside, tense inside.
The Vedic reading
In the Vedic tradition, a sign takes most of its meaning from the planets inside it, so this reading starts with the Sun.
Where Parashara says the Sun's light is lowest, and why that is never read alone.
Libra is the sign Parashara calls the Sun's fall (debilitation), where its light is lowest, deepest at 10 degrees. The ruler, Venus, is unfriendly to the Sun. Santhanam's notes show that other placements in a full chart can cancel a fall (neechabhanga), so Vedic astrologers never read this on its own.
Parashara pictures Libra as a two-footed sign of open land, facing west.
- Ruled by
- Venus
- Kind of sign
- Movable: starts things. The West calls this Cardinal.
- Strongest
- By day
- Part of the body
- The lower belly
Parashara pictures time as one person lying across the sky, with Aries at the head and Pisces at the feet. Each sign is one part of that body. One more thing: in Vedic practice, people usually go by their Moon sign rather than their Sun sign. The Moon sign needs a birth time.
What choice have you been leaving open, and what would it cost to make it?
